What we do

Give agency to our child readers

‘Libraries should reflect the needs and interests of their readers not the commercial objectives of the book industry. For too long schools have been encouraged to buy generic boxes of newly published books.  We need to give agency to our child readers and select libraries based on what they want to read.’

Bridget Martindale, ELFS.

Pilot School Elibraries

ELibraries for Schools (ELFS) is a new charity which seeks to improve access to books for children by providing them with a funded eBook library specially chosen with them to reflect the needs and interests of their current pupils.

Our first pilot elibrary has just launched at Dairsie Primary School in Fife, Scotland. Using the Open University Reading for Pleasure framework and our own carefully developed resources we built a picture of the pupils at Dairsie and then used our search and discovery technology to curate their bespoke elibrary. Dairsie’s elibrary has been generously funded by the St Andrew’s University Community Fund.

We also have a number of other pilot projects planned and are seeking funding for these from corporate sponsors, grants and donations.

A National School Ebook Library

ELFS is also engaged in lobbying for a National School eBook Library in each of the UK’s regions, in support of our long term goal to provide all children in the UK with access to the entire catalogue of children’s books.
